Part 1: Pehli Mulaqat | First Encounter

Layla-Majnun - A Story Of Immortality, Romance & Sacrifice

نجد سے جانب لیلیٰ جو ہوا آتی ہے
From the direction of Najd comes the breeze,
دلِ مجنوں کے دھڑکنے کی صدا آتی ہے
Carrying with it the sound of the beloved's heartbeat.

Centuries ago, a boy named Qays in the city of Najd, was fated to become a diwana (Lover) and was sent away to a madrassa (Islamic School), but the measures taken to prevent his transition to Majnun was the very decision that began his descent to infatuation. Here, Majnun laid eyes on Layla and began the evolution from a pehli mulaqat (first meeting) to a pehla nasha (first-sight love) - subtle at first, starting from curiosity and into infatuation, leading to the beginning of Dastaan-e-Layla Majnun.
Until one day, they have pulled apart. Layla and Majnun were distraught and spent a day apart, a week, then a month. Time moved slowly at first, with each grain of sand slowly making its way down the hourglass.

Years later Layla was roaming through a chaotic, colorful market packed with stalls. Her eyes fell on an anklet she instantly drifted towards to see closely. That’s when there was a drop of an anklet, Majnun leaning forward and the force of Fate to bring the two together once again. For Layla, it felt as though a force of the wind hit her while Majnun saw his dreams unfolding into reality. As Layla leaves the anklet behind in shock, Majnun purchases it and gazes at it as his mind thinks of only one word, one face, one emotion - Layla.

The pair find themselves sharing a moment that revives their relationship as they meet on a swing and Majnun begins to tie the anklet around Layla’s ankle. He finds himself trying to engrave the sound of Layla’s light laughter, the sensation of their fingers slightly grazing one another, and the sparkle in her eyes. Majnun found himself shaken out of a dream and the meeting stood still, static in motion.

Part 2: Tum, Mein Aur Ek Khat | You, Me & A Letter

From that moment on, everything was about you, me & a letter. Majnun began to spend every waking moment writing an endless stream of letters for Layla and spent his nights dreaming of her. Layla began to wait every day for a pigeon to reach her with another letter from her love, finding herself lost in hopes of their future together as she held each letter close to her chest. The words on every letter held together their memories and made their love immortal. However, their time together was short-lived and these fleeting moments of devotion became a memory of the past. Forces beyond their imagination worked towards their separation, from their families to the people around them. Some storytellers say that Majnun was banished to the desert after being stoned and it was followed by them taking their last breath together while others have claimed their love story ended with other variations of tragedy. But the only undeniable ending is that today they persist as rebellions with a cause of love and their story remain alive.
